United Methodists Do Not Torture

Our commitment to truth and justice is based on God’s character. We, as faithful Christians holding each other accountable in God's love and redemption, call for an independent Commission of Inquiry in order to know the truth of the extent of all acts of torture. Knowing the truth of past actions is essential to being free to respect the basic dignity and human rights of all people in the future. We must never torture again.

We pledge to bring awareness to this issue by participating in Torture Awareness Month (June) and lifting up victims of torture throughout the world. We must hold each other accountable in Christian love to transform the world and bring God’s love and peace to all people.

Our commitment to human rights is grounded in the conviction that each and every human life is sacred. Therefore the United Methodist Church endorses legislative and judicial remedies for the use of torture and illegal detention ...such as the appointment of special counsels [and] appropriate investigations.
